Bunker Mentality
If an Englishman’s home is his castle, then it seems that an American’s home is his missile base.

Ten years ago businessman Bari Hotchkiss bought a decommissioned Titan Missile Base in Central Washington to be used as a summer camp for his children.
Just imagine…
“Hey kids, we’re off to summer camp!”
“Daddy, will we be climbing trees, swimming in lakes ‘n spotting critters?”
“No son, we’ll all be sitting in a nuclear missile base, making like it’s 1962.”
“Daddy, you’ve got issues.”
“Duck and cover, son!”
Not my idea of a fun summer, but hey, each to their own as the French say (usually in French, whilst nuking another atoll).
Anyway, it appears the novelty has worn off and Mr Hotchkiss is now selling his Cold War castle on eBay for a bargain $1.5 million. For the new owner the suggested uses are: a resort, a camp, a retreat or a spa. But, for all you fungi fanatics, he’s less impressed with the idea of mushroom farms:
“Joint Venture (Preferred) – something neat – not like raising mushrooms.”
Damn, there goes my Dragons’ Den proposal: “Nuclear Mushrooms – we grow, you glow.”
(Update: 20/10/08. Sadly the base is no longer for sale on Ebay, but if you’ve always harboured dreams of living out your Dr Strangelove fantasy to the full, you can see more on it here: Titan Missile Base for rent or lease.)
